Tanakaya Japanese Restaurant offers a cozy, casual dining experience nestled inside London’s Farmer’s Market at 130 King St. This spot feels more intimate than a typical full-scale restaurant, with a smaller footprint and a comfortable, informal atmosphere that suits quick lunches or easy dinners rather than extended dining outings.

The cuisine focuses on Japanese classics with a variety of ramen, sushi, and bento-style dishes that show thoughtful care, especially given the limits of the space. Among the highlights are their BBQ Pork Bone Ramen, which features a rich broth and perfectly soft-cooked egg, and their sushi rolls like the Shrimp Tempura and Spicy Salmon Roll that lean on fresh, crispy textures. Staples like Chicken Teriyaki on rice and Unagi carry the menu, making it approachable for those looking for familiar flavors.

Locals appreciate Tanakaya for its speedy service and well-portioned servings that satisfy without overwhelming, making it a reliable stop for weekday lunches or casual dinners in the Market area. The size of the restaurant means seating is cozy, and it’s common to see a steady flow of customers grabbing takeout or enjoying their meal on-site during market hours.

The atmosphere is practical yet pleasant — the staff is efficient, and the space is functional but friendly, designed more for good food than lingering. The presence inside the Market adds a lively, community-focused vibe, pulling in people already out running errands or picking up fresh goods in the area.

Best for:

  • Lunch or dinner for individuals or small groups who want authentic Japanese dishes without the formality
  • Sushi lovers looking for fresh rolls with crisp textures and balanced rice amounts
  • Ramen enthusiasts who value a brothy bowl served hot and ready
  • Market-goers who want a convenient and quick Japanese meal option nearby

When to visit: Midday during the Farmer’s Market hours provides buzz without being overcrowded. Early evening visits work well for those seeking something casual and filling without waiting long.

Got salmon skin roll, fire dragon roll, and white tuna roll. Larger proportion of rice than what I’m used to. Ultra crispy salmon skin and tempura shrimp fillings!!! I know lettuce in sushi seems a little unconventional but you barely taste it.

Ordered delivery & the packaging was so great. They even included a ramen spoon which I thought was great. The broth was delivered piping hot & I didn’t need to heat it up at all. I went with the pork bone broth and ordered a dream roll on the side. It was all so fresh and absolutely delicious. Also the egg in the ramen was cooked PERFECTLY. I HIGHLY recommend Update. Tried their beef hot pot too! It was super yummy & loaded with beef & veggies.

Few places serve vegetarian ramen and do a good job. I had a vegetarian gyoza ramen in spicy miso broth, with a marinated egg. The food was served pretty fast which is always impressive. It tasted really good too. The broth was warm and spicy - perfect on any day. The gyoza were plenty and very full. They soaked up the broth over time and got juicy which made the flavour better. The portion size was plenty to justify the price. Highly recommend anyone to try this. They are very accommodating of your dietary restrictions and that is always good to see.

It’s located inside the London farmer market. So everything is kinda small. Service is fast and staff is well equipped. I loved their eel on rice. Soooo yummy. Portion is good. Sashimi is ok. Nothing too special.

The tables were properly distanced and it was good to eat in! Enjoyed the spicy yakisoba and a Bento box! The tapioca in the bubble tea wasn't the greatest but the FOOD! Adding the $1 to make my yakisoba spicy is so good, I loved it!!
